At Least 2 Dead As IAF Helicopter Crashes in J&K’s Budgam || SNE

An IAF helicopter crashed near the Garend Kalan village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam area, leaving at least two dead, news agencies reported on Wednesday, 27 February.According to some reports, as many as four people have died in the crash, including two pilots and two aircrew.After the incident, Pakistan Armed Forces Spokesperson Major General Asif Ghafoor said that his country had no engagement with the aircraft that crashed in Budgam.



“There are reports of the crash of an Indian aircraft on the Indian side (in Budgam), we had no engagement with that aircraft.”



Earlier, Ghafoor had said that the Pakistan Air Force had shot down two Indian aircraft inside Pakistani airspace, with one of them falling inside the Indian territory. An official IAF response on the crash is awaited.



Officials said two bodies were seen near the site of the crash. The identity of the deceased could not be confirmed immediately, they said. According to ANI, a Mi-17 transport chopper crashed.Residents from the village told The Quint that a flying machine, most likely a helicopter of the Indian Army or Indian Air Force, crashed and caught fire at around 10:15 am.Deputy Commissioner of Budgam Syed Sehrish confirmed to The Quint that an aircraft crashed near the village, about 7 km from the district headquarters. She said that a team of officials had been rushed to the village and details were being ascertained.




Civilian flights to and from Jammu and Kashmir have been suspended after the helicopter crash, with Srinagar, Jammu, Leh and other airports being closed for civilian air traffic.


Pakistani jets on Wednesday violated the Indian airspace in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch and Rajouri districts, dropping bombs on the way out, according to officials cited by PTI.

Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated on Tuesday, 27 February, with the Indian Air Force (IAF) carrying out air strikes on terror camps across the LoC in Pakistan in a pre-dawn operation.
