Punjab Election 2017: Romancing Punjab

Anxiety grips Punjab as elections approach. The electorate is just like the family of the bride. They have to choose the best groom for their bride, otherwise their dearest daughter will intensely suffer throughout the life. So dear Punjabis wear your thinking hat to vote and support the best bridegroom.

As the elections approach the beaus are four grooms getting ready for the marriage of convenience in Punjab. These four major suitors- Parkash Singh Badal, Capt. Amrinderr Singh, Arvind Kejriwal and Navjot Singh Sidhu will either themselves try their luck or field proxy candidates for the Punjabi bride to be. Let’s look at the chances of various suitors and how they are plotting and planning political honeymoon in 2017.

Leading the pack of suitors from Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is Parkash Singh Badal who has been romancing Punjab since 2007. At 90 years he might seem to be a little too old to handle the new Punjabi bride but his addiction to power and proximity to the right wing party at the centre might give him a booster dose for the new honeymoon.

The denting and painting of his image and party’s performance has begun in right earnest. The party critics are being cornered and silenced, vitamin M (Money) is being supplied to all the arteries of SAD to make it look cosmetically glamourous and happy.

It remains to be seen how the bride to be looks at the personality of the first suitor Parkash Singh Badal. If the bride only goes by the name and fame and fails to inquire about the suitor’s track record then there will be mystifying light in the life of Badals once again. But if the bride looks at the health of administration of the last 10 years, then the inter incumbency factor might become the game spoiler for Badal’s in 2017 elections.

The glow on his face of PSB may be a little subdued due to 10 years of rigorous manoeuvring skills to scale down opposition attacks for deteriorating law and order in Punjab, tapering down, shifting and jabbing of industrial sector and stagnation in agriculture sector. The SAD government remained addicted to power and overlooked aspirations of the youth due to which drugs filled the void in young people’s life. Drug Addiction problem in Punjab is not a supply problem, but a demand problem. Stopping the supply will not kill the demand. So the government has to look beyond the supply chain, if it’s really serious about keeping the physical and political health under check in the state.

The media reports about cross connection between aides of PSB with drug mafia ruffled the feathers of the ruling family in Punjab. The alleged rape case in a moving bus belonging to the Badals also scandalised and vitiated the political and ideological atmosphere in the land of love and bravery.

Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall. Clouds come floating into Badal’s life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add colour to the sunset sky. Will there be a dawn for the old man who belongs to SAD, will he be able to woo the new Punjabi bride or will 2017 elections spell nemesis ruling family?
Capt. Amarinder Singh is head of the royal family of the erstwhile State of Patiala, enjoys the blessing of the hand and is considered as the prince royal of 2017 Punjab elections. He is considered to be the most legible suitor of Punjabi bride.
While rest of the suitors seem to be losing credibility by their actions of over ambitious flirting with the voters. Capt. Amarinder Singh seems to be focussed and is making his strategy based on ethics and principles in politics. He is a trustworthy suitor who has truck-loads of experience behind him. He was Chief Minister of Punjab from 2002 to 2007. Presently, he is the sitting President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC). He is also Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the 16th Lok Sabha having been chosen for the position after his election as a Member of Parliament from Amritsar after defeating BJP heavyweight Arun Jaitiley. Prime Minister Narinder Modi later brought Arun Jaitiley into his cabinet and made him the Finance Minister.
Capt. Amarinder Singh is a skilled warrior who can take up any challenge in his stride and abide by his words without too much pressure from outside sources. While the character of rest of the suitors in Punjab is visible to the people, they are perplexed whether to give them bridegroom’s dress or to give them a dressing down because they have been hitting the wrong cods with the bride’s family.
Arvind Kejriwal was one of the most talked about beau in Punjab in the run up to the Punjab elections and the family members of the Punjabi bride had made up the mind to marry their daughter to a graduate from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and Ramon Magsaysay Award winner. But over the last six months Arvind Kejriwal and his party Aam Aadmi Party are in the news for wrong reasons.
Probably there are too many AAAAA’s in the party’s name and people are thinking negatively about it due to adultery in relationship between Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal and Lt. Governor of Delhi Najib Jung. Due to the quixotic battle between the ruling forces in Delhi, the sparks have also started burning the hay house which Aam Aadmi Party created in the Parliamentary elections in 2014.
A party which was considered precise and accurate in spinning the wheel of Indian politics became from Aggressive to Antithetical, Abusive, Adultery party. The leaders who were considered as messiahs of Punjab made headlines for wrong reasons. Be it Sucha Singh Chhotepur, Hardeep Singh Kingra, Sandeep Kumar or Bhagwant Maan became seismic centres and indicated fault lines appearing within Aam Aadmi Party, resulting in sullying the image of suitor Arvind Kejriwal. Although Arvind Kejriwal thinks, his party having five A’s will be able to win the Punjabi bride in the mist of confusion created by Congress and Akali Dal. Arvind army’s surgical strikes need a bit of luck and pluck to woo the bride as the family members (Punjabis) in the state have started distancing themselves from the AAP due to forked eyed approach.
The miserable have no other medicine, but only hope. Navjot Singh Sidhu, after flirting with cricket switched to commentary. His passion for politics helped him to become a Member of Parliament from Amritsar on BJP ticket. But he did not have a smooth ride in politics as he did not mend his way of hooking the politicians within the party for a six whenever they bowled at him. His aggressive batting on the field and off the field created more enemies than friends due to which he had to switch over to comedy shows.
It is likely to be seen how Sidhu’s comic sense can impress the bride in Punjab. He does have a funny bone but there are many stray dogs and he has to be careful from ferocious political carnivorous parties. Sidhu’s hobnobbing with BJP, Congress and Aam Aadmi Party just before the election has done little good to his political career as he is now labelled as politician with hara-kiri tendencies. All political parties want to be entertained by his oratory skills but they do not want to promote hara-kiri politics within their rank and file.
As Sidhu’s liability is greater than his assets in political ring, his marriage ring will have to wait, as he does not have band baaja barat (political party). From where will he get the bride maids and best boys to convince the Punjabi family that he is a serious candidate for the bride. Even if the bride likes him, her love will not be suffice for suitable wedding with Navjot Singh Sidhu.
People of Punjab are saying, “We know what we are, but know not what our future is going to be after the great 2017 election wedding ceremony.” Will Punjab be able to live a happy married life after 2017 elections or will the most suitable boy, con the bride and plunder the wealth of Punjab for personal grooming and ask for dowry to satisfy political bosses? Is the moot question?
In Punjab getting engaged is an amazing feeling, but once the initial thrill of the “I SAID YES” will wear off, enjoying a happy wedding can feel pretty overwhelming.
There’s a huge amount of pressure for everything to go perfectly, and if you’re anxious about the future of your children you’ll probably feel that pressure more intensely in 2017 Punjab elections.

In fact, you probably will want to think carefully about things like economy of the state, agriculture sector, industrial sector, creation of jobs for the youth and development and growth of Punjab. It’s equally important to give yourself plenty of time to plan and choose the right political party which can give good governance in Punjab. You might not always feel super keen to participate in the elections but you have to be serious if you want better governance in Punjab by choosing the right groom in your constituency.
