Architect of the Nanakshahi calendar Pal Singh Purewal has asserted that a separate calendar of the Sikh community defeated the attempts of the majority community to assimilate the former in its fold.
Addressing participants during a seminar called by Akal Purkh Ki Fauj and Panthak Talmel Sangathan, Purewal said a calendar was an important and necessary part of a separate community.
Quoting Eleanor Nesbitt’s book ‘Sikhism – A Very Short Introduction’, he said it also pointed towards successful efforts of the Sikh community to stop its assimilation in the majority community by adopting the separate calendar.
He hit out at the SGPC for fixing the dates of Gurpurb as per the Bikrami calendar. He said 70 percent of the gurdwaras abroad had adopted and implemented the Nanakshahi calendar.
