A super-new Sikh temple is opening in Great Barr.
The official opening of the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara on Aldridge Road – next to Perry Locks Care Home – will be taking place in the coming weeks.
Hundreds of volunteers have been spending their own time renovating the former Blakelands House office building, which was also a nursery.
It has taken over 18 months to complete and the Gurdwara General Secretary Jagjit Singh cannot wait to welcome the local community.

“It’s been a real labour of love for the hundreds of volunteers,” explained the dad-of-three, “who have all dedicated their own time and money to help construct this wonderful new facility.
“There is a large and growing Sikh community in the north Birmingham region and surrounding areas like Sutton Coldfield and Streetly where there was no Gurdwara before now so this is a very welcome and much awaited development.”
Worshippers staged a special religious opening ceremony last month for the ceremonial installation of the Gurdwara flag pole and reading of the holy Sikh scriptures called the Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
The new three-storey temple is 30,000 sq ft. It has parking spaces for around 100 cars and the busiest time will be Sunday mornings.
“We’re putting the final few touches on it and there will be an official opening day in the coming weeks where will be inviting all communities Sikh and non-Sikh alike to come to the Gurdwara and take a look around at the new facilities,” added Jagjit, a solicitor by profession.

“The beauty of a Gurdwara is that it is more than a place of worship and welcomes people of all faiths and backgrounds including serving free vegetarian meals called Langar to all.
“We’ve got lots planned for all the community so watch this space!”
Singh Sabha Gurdwara Great Barr is due to open some time in May, subject to completion.
The Sikh temple will be open seven days a week, with hundreds to attend on a weekly basis for Sunday congregation.
