NEW DELHI: A 50-year-old woman died and her 22-year-old daughter was severely injured when their two-wheeler was hit by a speeding car under the Moti Bagh flyover on Saturday evening. The errant driver left his car and ran away.
The incident happened around 5.30pm when Ranjeet Kaur (50) and Navneet Kaur (22) were going towards their house in Vishnu Garden from Govindpuri in southeast Delhi.
Preliminary probe suggests that they were going towards Dhaula Kuan and were waiting at the traffic signal under the flyover. Navneet was driving the vehicle and had moved a little ahead when a speeding Maruti Eeco coming from behind rammed them.
The mother and daughter were thrown off their two-wheeler and Ranjeet was run over by the car. Navneet got trapped below the car. The driver stopped his car and came out to check, but instead of taking them to a hospital he panicked and ran away. The errant driver also left behind his mobile phone and car registration papers.
Passersby noticed the two women lying in a pool of blood. They pulled out Navneet from under the car and took mother-daughtrer duo to AIIMS Trauma Center where Ranjeet was declared brought dead. Navneet has suffered injuries to her face, shoulder and legs. She was released from the hospital on Sunday morning.
Police have taken details of the driver from his mobile phone number and the vehicle’s registration papers. CCTV footage from the area is being scanned to know the sequence of events. Cops suspect that the driver was drunk and speeding. He hit the two-wheeler while trying to overtake another vehicle. A case for rash driving and death due to negligence has been registered against him.
